with a breath
the universe expands
within a life
becoming
In Atoms, the previous section of this work for oboe, voice and piano, the universe was playfully scattering and gathering atoms and now, those atoms take the form of a new life.
The oboe heralds this gathering. The unaccompanied voice begins the chant. A single voice, pure, simple. The piano enters delicately, in parallel motion, adding context. The oboe returns; its contrary motion mirroring the vocal chant.
The hymn-like simplicity remains, but the single melody is now fleshed out.
The three parts continue in canon. A single cell has become a complex organism, with a beating heart and life-sustaining breath.
Celia Craig - oboe
