In 2017 I released an album of piano music called Phases. Most of the tracks were reworkings of my songs into instrumentals. One exception was When Memory Fades, Love Remains which I improvised late one night when thinking about my parents’ relationship of 70 years, and the passing of my mum.
It has a faltering quality to it, as one life fades away in the presence of the other.
What is left in one
who does not remember?
Love and music.
Not a name but the fullness.
Not the sequence of events
but order of rhythm and pitch,
a piece of time in which to exist.
